How do I use this email service?
After you register for an account, you will receive a confirmation email that contains a link to the web site where you can log into your email account, using the password you specified on the sign-up page. From there you will be in a web mail service that provides typical email options. For example select “Inbox” to read mail, “New Message” to write mail. For more advanced features, select “Help” which is on the menu for most screens.
Who can I send and received email from with this test email account?
You can send and receive email with any other email user on the Afilias test server, even if it is in a different language. As other providers add support for the new standard, you will also be able to send email to users on those systems. You currently cannot send email to older email systems that do not support the EAI protocol extensions. At a later time we will be adding support for “Downgrade” which will allow you to also send email to older email systems.
Who else is supporting this standard?
There are a number of organizations from many different countries who are participating in the IETF working group for this new email standard. Some of them are also working on testing new email systems, but not all of them will be hosting a general public trial.
When will this new email protocol be used by existing email providers?
The technical details for the new protocol are essentially complete and the “core” documents defining all the details of the protocol are expected to be issued as RFCs by the IETF by the summer of 2008. This work is currently classed as “Experimental” but it will be upgraded to “Standards Track”. The target date for the protocol to be officially released as an Internet standard is spring of 2009. At that point in time, it is expected that most major email providers including popular web mail sites and ISPs will begin upgrading their service to support the new standard.
Can I use Outlook or other email software to access the Afilias mail?
At this point in time, email can only be accessed using the Afilias web mail client. We expect to be testing access with other email clients that have been upgraded to support the new protocol. If you are aware of such an email client that you would like use, please contact us at help@global-email.info
